In a small tank, the waste builds up quickly and can cause ammonia levels to rise, leading to health problems for the turtles. After researching and trying out various options, I have compiled a comprehensive buying guide on large tanks for turtles to help fellow turtle owners make an informed decision.
Size
The first and most important factor to consider when buying a tank for your turtle is the size. Turtles need ample space to swim, bask, and explore. A general rule of thumb is that the tank should be at least 4 times the length of your turtle and 2-3 times its width. For example, if you have a 6-inch long turtle, the tank should be at least 24 inches long and 12-18 inches wide.
Material
Turtle tanks are available in various materials such as glass, acrylic, plastic, and even custom-made wooden tanks. Each material has its pros and cons. Glass tanks are sturdy and offer good visibility but can be heavy and prone to cracking or breaking. Acrylic tanks are lightweight but may scratch easily. Plastic tanks are budget-friendly but not very durable. Custom-made wooden tanks can provide a natural-looking habitat but require regular maintenance.
After considering the material options, I opted for an acrylic tank as it was lightweight yet durable enough to withstand my active turtles’ movements.

I use a canister filter with activated carbon, ceramic rings, and bio-balls in my tank to keep the water clean and clear.
Basking Area
Turtles need access to both land and water in their tanks. A large basking area is essential for them to dry off completely after swimming as turtles can develop shell rot if they stay wet for too long. The basking area should be big enough for all your turtles to comfortably climb onto without overcrowding each other.

I use a combination of UVB bulbs with full-spectrum lighting in my tank to mimic natural sunlight conditions.
